Prolotherapy (Proliferative Therapy), also know as Non-Surgical Ligament and Tendon Reconstruction and Regenerative Joint Injection, is a recognised musculoskeletal procedure that stimulates the body’s healing processes to strengthen and repair injured and painful joints and connective tissue. It is based on the fact that when ligaments or tendons (connective tissue) are stretched or torn, the joint they are holding destabilises and can become painful. The original term used for this therapy was “sclerotherapy”, coined in the 1930’s when this treatment was discovered, and included dextrose (glucose solution) injections.

We constantly aim to be at the forefront of chronic disease management. Our clinics achieve this through regular training and knowledge exchange programs that we have in place. We stay connected to the latest news and research, as well as investing heavily in modern technology, just to make sure our patients have the best care possible.

Through proper diagnosis, our experienced staff will carefully put together a recovery plan to assist in getting you back to your daily activities. We use the latest in technology and the pool of specialist knowledge to manage this process.

In addition to the traditional approach to recovery, at our clinics we offer Laser, Electro and Prolo therapy. The recovery time can be halved by combining the right methods. Recent case studies involving strength athletes were groundbreaking post injury as well as pre competition.

LLLT is a laser light therapy that improves tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone, nerves), reduces inflammation and reduces pain wherever the beam is applied. Treatment time typically take up to 20 minutes. A typical course is between 10-15 sessions spread across two to three weeks period. LLLT works predominately on a protein in mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase) to increase ATP and reduce oxidative stress. A cascade of mitochondrial and intracellular downstream effects lead to improved tissue repair and reduced inflammation. Please visit our Lasmik website for more information.

Using the latest in electro therapy technology, we are able to help athletes to recover and perform at their peak. Electro therapy has many modalities and has been a subject of many studies. Used at the right place, at the right time and for the right reasons, it has a phenomenal capacity to be effective. As such, our clinics invest in the latest technology and staff training in order to be most effective in this area. The biggest benefit however comes from using electro therapy as a part of a package of care. This is why in our clinics we offer other methods of recovery and performance enhancing procedures to compliment each other.

Our experienced medical staff are trained in the area of pain management through the use of latest technology, such as laser, electro and prolo therapy. Our view in pain management is to explore conservative approach before the drug prescription route.

History

The Medical Centre has a long history of providing medical attention to the people of Sheffield and surrounding areas of Kentish and Railton. The first resident Doctor in the area (Dr. Robert Davis) commenced his practice in 1887 and continued to serve the district until his death in 1907.

Our dedication is to offer preventative medicine to help our patients better manage their general health or their chronic conditions. We want to give our patients a better quality of life and to assist them in being able to care for themselves, and their conditions, without too much inconvenience. Being a Rural practice, we aim to offer our patients as many services as we can, so that access is easier and more convenient. The GP can also refer the patient to the Rehabilitation Gym for a customised exercise plan, relating to their health requirements.

The Sheffield Medical Centre has been involved with training programs for a number of years. We regularly have Year 3 and 4 Medical Students from the Rural Clinical School, and occasionally, we have Nursing students. We support the Rural Clinical School in helping to promote Rural Health and encouraging future GPs to remain in Rural areas in Tasmania.

In 2013 the Sheffield Medical Centre was awarded the RACGP Tasmania General Practice of the Year Award. The Centre achieved this honour by providing a highest standard of service on offer to patients, the health promotion in place and the practice’s involvement in general practice teaching.

Later that year, the Sheffield Medical Centre had also received the Australian Business Quality Award. This award was based on the feedback from patients in relation to the quality of service they have received.

We pride ourselves in providing the highest level of patient care. We are constantly looking at the latest available technology and how to improve our patient’s quality of life. To achieve this, the Sheffield Medical Centre has formed strong relationships with many tertiary suppliers in Australia and around the world.
